Bolster-architecten's renovation assignment of the residential building was quite clear. Retain the building's existing form, but maximise the insulation in both the roof and façade and, in the process, add a fresh and modern look without major structural work. The lightness of the Ardonit slate was an advantage as it added no unnecessary weight to the basic structure. The budget was also an important factor in the choice of material. The Ardonit natural grey slates satisfied every requirement, which was why it was decided to use this material.

The Ardonit natural grey slates also give the building a natural appearance. Natural grey slates are most commonly used in a 40x40 format, however, after discussions with the roofing company Dakwerken Smets from Lummen, an alternative 60x30 format was chosen, along with an installation method known as vertical double cover. This gives the slate a kind of weather-beaten lined pattern which adds a lively character to the façade.

The architect also wanted to work with a hidden gutter in order to make things look as sleek as possible. The material literally bends around the building, creating a seamless transition between façade and roof.

Of course, it is not only the material that is important to the final result in a project. The installation by the roofing company Dakwerken Smets and good communication between Bolster and the roofer were also key factors in the good execution. Moreover, the client's budget was respected at all times. This means that they too are delighted with the end result of their home.
