Roof & façade renovation with Ardonit natural grey slates

Architect Sarah Dewulf is renovating her own home with natural grey Ardonit slate from SVK. Both the roof & façade have been fully updated, giving the home a completely new, modern and timeless look.

Challenge accepted

Architect Sarah Dewulf took on the challenge of thoroughly renovating her home with the SVK Ardonit slates in a natural grey colour and with a 60 x 30 cm dimension. Despite only being constructed in 2000, the original dwelling was already showing signs of serious physical defects. Serious condensation problems, leading to a build-up of mould, were at the root of the issue. Furthermore, rising moisture in the lower cavities was even causing damage to the inner plasterwork. On top of that, the home was far too dark and closed-off inside. High time, then, to intervene and take on the whole building in one go.

Half-brick covering

The natural grey Ardonit slate was chosen for the roof & façade in a half-brick covering. From the start of the design phase, it was very clear that the superstructure needed to form a contiguous whole with the roof. This meant that the eaves had to be shortened down so as to create a single entity. Moreover, the whole thing had to have a refreshing, timeless and modern look. It was this that quickly led to the choice of fibre cement slate from SVK, given that the 60x30 slate with three pre-drilled holes is very easy to affix to the façade in half-brick. SVK's technical services always review the possibilities for half-brick roof coverings on request, which helps ensure an invisible fastening with a sleek design.

Lightweight material

The Ardonit slate's light weight is one of the material's main advantages. This is a very important factor for roof and façade renovations, considering the need for maximum isolation while taking account of the total construction's weight. This means few materials are suitable for such a complete renovation. The full SVK slate range meets all of these important requirements, however.

Natural effect

A new extension was also built as part of the renovation. The new walls on the ground floor have been finished in a white, even Crepi, the existing walls with natural grey slate. The natural grey 60x30 Ardonit slate was chosen to bring about sufficient contrast and vitality. A major plus point is that this slate allows the façade to evolve alongside during the day. The façade is a darker grey in the morning and somewhat lighter by the afternoon. This is possible because this slate has no coating and nature is free to take its course. The garage door was also covered in slate. The two together form a sleek and appealing whole. Besides all the above-mentioned advantages, the slate was also a good fit for the total budget.

Keeping work and private life separate

Sarah Dewulf's home today meets all the requirements she had in mind for it. A contemporary home for her family that is full of light. On top of that, a home with its own office that brings work and home together, but also keeps them distinct.
