Can I paint Ornimat cladding panels myself?

Procedure for repainting:

If one were to consider repainting Ornimat cladding panels, there are a number of things to consider.

Ornimat cladding panels are coated at the factory under controlled conditions and temperature, with a special painting installation. Repainting large surfaces with the original Ornimat paint can therefore never produce a good result.

A hydrophobic agent (a wax) was added to the Ornimat paint system on SVK. When repainted, this can cause problems of paint adhesion for the new paint layer to be applied. Depending on the age of the boards and exposure to weather conditions, the hydrophobic agent may have already disappeared to a greater or lesser extent. In principle, repainting boards that have been exposed to weather conditions for several years poses fewer problems; repainting new boards is much more difficult. Such boards should in any case be well sanded and rinsed with water.

It should be checked on a case-by-case basis whether and to what extent it is necessary to sand the panel surface.

The sheets must be thoroughly cleaned before starting the re-satinisation works (see technical data Maintenance).

The works are best carried out by a specialised firm. It is recommended to obtain guarantees about the result before repainting the Ornimat panels.

Before painting the entire surface, it is always advisable to test on a small piece of panel to see whether the paint system you wish to apply adheres well to the Ornimat cladding panels. Whether a new layer of paint will adhere or not will depend on the type and quality of the paint, on the method of application and on the preparation of the panel surface. It is therefore impossible for SVK to predict with certainty whether a good result can be expected.

Materials:

  • Two-component polyurethane paint system (available from SVK on request only for repairing minor damages, for repainting we refer to retailers).
  • The components of this paint system must be mixed together in accordance with the instructions on the label.
  • The quantity of paint to be applied is kept to a minimum as it can only be used for a limited time. Surplus paint cannot be re-used. The various components can.
  • Store the components in the original packaging and always close them tightly after use. It is very important to store them frost-free.

Weather conditions:

Weather conditions necessary for proper processing of Ornimat paint:

  • Not rainy;
  • Not foggy;
  • Preferably not too strong wind, which can carry a lot of dust;
  • Open weather;
  • Minimum surface temperature: 25°C
  • Maximum surface temperature: 40°C.
